The legal position

What the law expects of you

Fire safety law in England puts the duty on the 'responsible person' — usually the employer, owner or whoever controls the premises. Fines for failing to comply are unlimited.

Every workplace needs one

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person for any non-domestic premises must carry out a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment and act on it.

It must be written down in full

Since 1 October 2023, the whole fire risk assessment must be recorded in writing, whatever the size of the business. Previously only firms with five or more employees had to record findings.

Who did it must be recorded

If someone helps you with the assessment, their name or organisation must be recorded, so it's worth making sure the person you use is competent.

It must stay current

The assessment must be reviewed regularly and whenever something significant changes: a new layout, extra storage, more staff, new processes or a fire or near miss.

How it works

From first call to finished assessment

01

Quick scoping call

We confirm the building, occupancy, hours and any existing assessment, then send a fixed quote within one working day.

02

Site inspection

We walk the whole premises: escape routes, fire doors, detection and alarm, emergency lighting, signage, storage, ignition sources and housekeeping.

03

Written assessment

You receive a clear, written fire risk assessment with risk-rated findings and a prioritised action plan, each action with an owner and a target date.

04

Follow-up and review

We help close actions, update your fire arrangements and emergency plan, and diarise your next review so the assessment never goes stale.
